The Quena is classified as an Andean flute. It is normally made up of 6 finger holes along with 1 thumbhole (located on the back end of the flute) and is traditionally constructed with bamboo. In order to create a sound with the Quena, one must close the top end of the flute with the flesh between their chin and lower lip, and blow a stream of air downwards, along the axis of the flute, over the U shaped mouthpiece.
